Fantastischer Künstler aus Norwegen - Al Deloner (ehem. Midnight Choir) - produzierte sein zweites Solo-Album "Flora in the Darkroom" zusammen mit Frithjof im Atomino Studio. Sehr zu empfehlen - reinhören!!!

Zweifelt noch jemand daran, wer die Musik von Midnight Choir entscheidend definiert hat? Er möge Al DeLoners Solo-Debüt hören, das nach seinen eigenen Worten nie zur Veröffentlichung geplant war. Nur Skizzen sollten sie sein; lediglich zur Demonstration, wie die Songs klingen sollten: »Da, wo ich jetzt "ba-ba-ba-pa" singe, soll dann ein Englischhorn rein, eine Trompete, naja, halt etwas Orchestrierung«, erklärte er der Plattenfirma. Doch diese überzeugte den Singer/Songwriter, dass sein Album genau so und nicht anders zu erscheinen habe: ein Mann mit seinen Instrumenten – Gitarre, Mundharmonika, Melodica, ein paar billige Keyboards –, unspektakulär selbst aufgenommen in seinem Heim-Studio.
Sicher hat Al DeLoner nicht diese samtig schmeichelden Stimme von Paal Flaata, sondern ist mit einer eher ungelenken, näselnden Stimme »gestraft«. Doch seine Songs und seine reduzierten Arrangements, wo ein Äther-Rauschen oder eine verhallte Melodica alle Einsamkeit der Welt auszudrücken verstehen, sind die Essenz dessen, was die Musik von Midnight Choir immer ausgemacht hat: Weltschmerz, Enttäuschung, Nachtgedanken, gegossen in bewusst schlichte Songs von berückender Schönheit

1. "REVENGE":
Adam Sky (aka. Adamski) sings on this one. Nikki Sudden too.
Ringo Fire told me he loved the lyrics;
"It`s very simple and direct. Everybody can identify with it. We all seek revenge at some point in life".
He is right, I guess. In my writing I try to touch upon human emotions. Good or bad.
2. "WATERTEST":
We were having a barbecue party on the studio premises one evening, when the conversation drifted in the direction of Martin Luther. Someone pointed out that the protestants burned more "witches" than the catholics did. If this is a historical fact or not, I do not know. But the whole discussion made me think about the Norwegian middle- age practice of throwing women into the water in order to determine, whether a woman was a "witch" or not. (If she drowned; she was not a "witch", if she would float up; "the witch" was to be burned at the stakes.) With all of us laughing at the insanity, and/or stupidity, of this reasoning , I felt the inspiration to write a song on the topic. I went into the studio, picked up an acoustic guitar. Five minutes later I´d written the song. We recorded it right there on the spot. Joseph Parsons added the Appalachian harmony vocals.
3. "FRANKIE & LOU":
I have a friend named Frankie. He is a music journalist, living in Hamburg. He is one of the most entertaining personalities I`ve ever met. When he talks you listen to pure poetry. Frankie is proudly gay, and he wants the world to know it. Without a doubt, he would fit into any film by Quentin Tarantino.
For a long time I wanted to record a conversation with him, then add music to it. One evening I put a microphone at his kitchen table, and rolled tape. Nothing really came out of it. Twenty minutes in, the talk was still dry. I´m thought I´m wasting tape here, and I turned it off. I then lean over to Frankie and ask him if he`d ever meet Lou Reed. Frankie quickly replies: "I gave him a blow-job once!"
I am a great admirer of Mr. Reed's work. He is one of my heroes. I can only pray he has a sense of humor.
4. "ROCK`N´ROLL SUCKS":
I was watching LIVE 8 at TV. For whatever reason, this was my reaction to it.
Upon first hearing, a girlfriend, had to listen to it twenty times in a row. She thought it was a love song!
5. "KILLER":
I lived with this song intensely, researching it for two weeks. I wanted to write a one-dimensional portrait of a serial-killer; The ultimate outsider. It could be Ted Bundy. It could be the Hillside stranglers. Characters like that. I had serious doubts whether it was right or wrong to write/release a song like this. I don't want to write songs that could give people the wrong ideas. It`s a responsibility that comes with the job. Nevertheless, I decided to go for it. The subject matter is for real. People like this exist.
6. "PISTOL":
This is an experimental track.
I remember reading this story in Uncut magazine about Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, frying Bob Geldof´s brain with smack (Lynott cut him a line of smack instead of coke) , just to take Bob´s wife upstairs to show her his "gun collection". Once in the bedroom he unzipped his pants and said: "This is the biggest gun I´ve got!".
The pistol in this song can also be seen as a metaphor.
7. "TWO STEPS":
Ringo Fire asked me for a catchy radio song. I gave him this. It´s been laying around for some years. It`s the sound of a guy kicking off his shoes; " To hell with the blues!"
8. "RELIGIOUS":
I have no recollection of writing this song at all. I woke up one morning and found it on a DAT tape, next to my bed. That happens from time to time. The great saxophone is played by Robert Frenzel. We struggled like hell to get a proper horn part for "Two Steps". I was very close to giving up on Robert. I took him aside, poured him a double scotch and said "Listen, man. I want you to put something of yourself into this. Play with genuine feeling and commitment. Don't be afraid to make mistakes! Just play the blues!" Robert went into his booth and laid down the part in one take. Fantastic!
9. "STILL COUNTRY":
I really like the lyrics on this one. "The scars we carry are not easily lost". I sing about trying to free oneself from the past. Not easily accomplished at all. You have to live with it. We first recorded it as a slow country song. Ringo asks me " What's the title?" I don`t have one, and mumble something about a country song. ""Country" is good", says Ringo and taps it into his computer. Later we record this up-tempo version. Ringo asks "What should we call this version?". I say; "It`s still country". Hence the title: "Still Country."
10. "WAKE ME UP" (DUET WITH NIKKI SUDDEN):
My agent in Germany connected me with Nikki. We had the studio ready, Keith Richards´ style; Champagne, red velvet, candles, the works. Nikki was a star, and he deserved some extra attention.
Nikki came straight from a gig. No sleep. Plenty of booze. Plenty of other stuff too, maybe.
At the studio we had hours to kill, the engineer was still 400 kilometers away. Nikki suggested we write a song together. "What key?" he´d ask - " I don´t know, how ´bout E?". We share a bottle of Pernod. By the evening we´d written and recorded "Wake Me Up". Nikki was sleeping through the session, we had to wake him up when it was time for him to sing. Next morning we follow Nikki to the station. He carries a bottle of champagne under his arm. He waves a hand, and steps onto the train.
We saw Nikki Sudden one more time, before he went (on his final trip) to America. I returned the favor by playing some instrumental bits on his last album "The truth doesn´t matter" in Berlin. Although his spirits were high, Nikki was clearly in bad physical shape. I remember thinking he was in need of some serious rest. To me it seemed the last thing he needed was yet another period of relentless touring. I didn´t say anything, though. Maybe I should have said something. Either way I look at it, I don´t think I could have said anything to change his mind. Nikki did it his own way, and he did it all the way to the end. You had to respect him for that.
Nikki would have turned fifty this summer. I speak for many, when I say, he will be deeply missed. He was a great inspiration, and ironically enough, in his presence you always felt so... alive. He had that impact on people. He was a legend in his own lifetime. Not many people can claim that.
With deep respect, we dedicate "Flora in the Darkroom" to Nikki Sudden (1956-2006).

11. "SEX, VIOLENCE & DEATH":
I picked up the opening lines of this one in a barroom. What did I answer? Have a guess...I could imagine Lucinda Williams singing this song.

Ja, kenne ich und gefällt mir auch sehr.
Aufmerksam geworden bin ich auf Al DeLoner auch nur deshalb, weil ihn Frithjof auf seinen bzw. den Atomino-Studio-Seiten verlinkt hat. Ich war in der Folge auch schon auf 2 seiner Konzerte (Akustik-Abende in Plauen 2007 und Dresden 2009) und kann dadurch aus eigenem Erleben sagen, daß diese Musik zwar "klein", aber fein und v.a. emotional berührend ist.

Nur muß man schon dazu sagen, daß das musikalisch 'ne ganz andere Baustelle als Electro-Rock ist - zur "gemeinen NL-Hörerschaft" wohl weniger kompatibel.
Übrigens ist Al DeLoners Auftritt beim Crossroads-Festival Anfang 2006 auch im WDR-Rockpalast zu sehen gewesen - und Frithjof hat ihn zu der Zeit ja nicht nur im Studio unterstützt, sondern ist (aka Ringo.Fire) auch mit auf der Tour dabei gewesen: http://www.wdr.de/tv/rockpalast/extra/bands/def/al_deloner.jsp

(Okay, zugegeben: Das ist zwar in der Tat "klein", aber weniger "fein und emotional berührend" - aber Frithjof ist im Bild (mit seiner ganz speziellen Umsetzung des "Watertests"...))
Ergänzt sei noch, daß für Anfang 2010 auch wieder ein neues Album angekündigt ist.
... jedenfalls "Danke, Mel!", daß jetzt auch an dieser Stelle auf Al Deloner verwiesen wird!

Ist ja doch immer fraglich inwiefern solche Beiträge Leser oder noch besser Interessenten finden. Ich kannte den Namen auch schon vom myspace atomino Profil, habe ihm aber zugegeben nicht viel Beachtung geschenkt "damals" - und jetzt hat mich das Album förmlich aus der Welt gerissen. Danke für die Links!!!
Ich hoffe sehr dass Mr DeLoner Deutschland bald wieder beehrt ansonsten werd ich wohl im Juli nach Frankreich fahren - muss ich unbedingt live sehen. Komm mit!
zum Thema Inkompatibilität - sicherlich ganz andere Baustelle, aber letztenendes geht es um Geschmack und ich mag ein blutiges Steak ebenso wie Erdbeertorte - wenn man nur einen erreicht, hat sichs gelohnt 
achja - der watertest ist wirklich ne geile Nummer!

Himmel, eigentlich wollte ich Dir als Reply auf Dein Posting hier ja noch 'ne PN schreiben, "damals" im Februar schon(!)... Nachdem ich nun ein gewisses euphori(oni)sches "One-Shot-Video" in der Tube entdeckt habe, komm ich wohl nicht umhin, das mit dem Schreiben mal noch nachzuholen...

LiebhaberInnen von Gitarrensoli besonders ans Herz zu legen dabei:
"Revenge" und "Two Steps", die in diesen Live-Versionen zigfach mehr rocken als auf dem "Flora..."-Album.
Aber "Pistol" kommt mit der Slideguitar auch seeehr gut, und "Religious" ist recht hübsch - und überhaupt...
Also, wer's nicht nach Fronkreische schafft oder auf ein weiteres Konzert in DE warten will, der kann's nun auch auf diese Weise erleben - und bekommt sogar noch den "Ringo.Fire" dazu...
(Wobei "Al DeLoner" in der Akustikbesetzung seit 2007 schon was anderes ist als damals mit der kompletten Band, wie gesagt.)
sooo, auch etwas verspätet aber wenn du den euphorionschen channel eh verfolgst, dann bist du ja sicherlich im Bilde. Frage vorab: bist du im facebook? ansonsten, jaa Frankreich war geil, stimmungstechnisch liegen tatsächlich welten zwischen album und live (von den songs abgesehen, wo er heroisch am piano platz nimmt ). von dem dresden gig hab ich nen mitschnitt, von frankreich krieg ich auch einen nächste woche, wenn alles gut geht - wenn interesse besteht?
am 24.8. kommt das neue album und im januar is ne kleine dtl.tour vorgesehen...
